5 Reasons To Install Epoxy Basement Flooring

by Jamie Carpenter

Epoxy flooring is actually a polymer-based coating that is applied over a concrete subfloor. It's very popular in garages and workshops where you need a durable but simple flooring option, but it's also well-suited for use in a basement as the following reasons illustrate.

1. Moisture Proof

Basements can be damp places, even if you have a sump pump and other moisture-reducing efforts in place. Even a small amount of moisture can damage vinyl and wood flooring, or lead to mold and mildew in carpeting. Epoxy flooring is naturally moisture-resistant. Further, since it is bonded directly to the concrete subflooring of the basement, moisture won't cause it to warp or curl like vinyl or linoleum tile.

2. Stain Resistance

Stains can be difficult to get out of any type of flooring. Even the plain concrete floor that is standard in a basement can develop stains from fluid spills or even water spotting. The same waterproof qualities that protect epoxy flooring from moisture also protect it from staining. You will never need to scrub or treat stains on an epoxy basement floor.

3. Easy Cleaning

You likely don't want to spend hours vacuuming, mopping, or polishing the floors in your basement. Plus, basement floors can get quite messy, especially if the space is used for hobbies, as a shop area, or as a family play space. Epoxy flooring only requires sweeping and periodic mopping — with no special cleansers — in order to stay in top condition.

4. Damage Resistance

Never worry about damage to the basement floor again if you go with the epoxy option. Epoxy is designed to take heavy use, so it's not likely to crack even if you drop something heavy on it. Further, if your basement does flood, the waters aren't likely to cause flooring damage if you have epoxy. An epoxy basement floor will likely be the last floor you ever need to put in your basement — even if you live in the house for the rest of your life.

5. Style Options

Another huge reason to get epoxy is that there are nearly infinite style options. You can choose flooring in a single color or a combination of custom colors. There are even pattern choices available in the event you don't want a solid color floor. It's simple to find an epoxy option that matches your basement design style.
