Creating A Beautiful Home

Increased Outdoor Space And Cooler Conditions

by Jamie Carpenter

Living in a mobile home that isn't surrounded by trees can make summertime difficult to contend with and you may run your air conditioner frequently. A fabric awning can be used to create an outdoor area to eat, hang out, or store items and will block the sun's rays from entering the windows that the fabric is suspended over.

Different Fabrics

Acrylic and vinyl are two common materials that residential awnings are constructed of, both equally durable and encompassing a wide range of colors and patterns. Acrylic awnings will dry quickly and vinyl ones often contain a water repellent coating, which will prevent mold and mildew. There are also metal, fiberglass, and canvas awnings on the market and some manufacturers use a blend of natural textiles to create a unique line of fabric coverings.

With the ownership of any awning, be conscientious about keeping the material clean and dry. If you prefer framed styles that remain intact throughout the year, choose a fabric variety that is waterproof and that contains a UV resistant coating.

For a retractable awning model, you don't need to be as concerned about the fabric type, since you can retract the awning as desired and keep the fabric neatly contained, but you should be wary that you will still need to complete routine maintenance and a spot check, prior to folding up the fabric.

Various Layouts

Determine if an awning is going to be used to create an outdoor space that is suitable for dining or sitting or if the awning is going to be used predominantly to keep the inside of your mobile home at a comfortable temperature. The manner in which sunlight influences the warmth level in your home and the amount of hours that you experience an influx in temperatures may help you choose an area to suspend an awning.

An awning can also be used to create a makeshift carport, which may be beneficial to you if you are currently leaving your vehicle exposed to the elements and would like to provide it with some protection. Choose an awning that will encompass the entire length of your mobile home or select a custom awning that is designed to cover a specific part of your property. If you would like to create a carport and an outdoor area, purchase two matching awnings and have one installed along each end of your mobile home.
