Need Some Garage Storage? What To Use & What To Avoid

by Jamie Carpenter

If you have items you need to put outside in a garage, you need to make sure that you store those items nicely. You don't want to stack everything up and just leave it sitting around in a disorganized manner. When you put items in your garage, you want them to be easily accessible.

Don't Repurpose Kitchen Cabinets

When it comes to creating garage storage, one idea that you will come across over and over again online is repurposing your own old wooden kitchen cabinets in your garage or picking up old wooden kitchen cabinets at a second-hand construction store to use in your garage.

Although this may seem like a good idea, as it allows you to repurpose old cabinets, it is really not the best idea. Wooden kitchen cabinets are made to be used inside of homes, where the environment and conditions are much more controlled.

They are not designed to be used in a garage environment, where the temperature changes through the year can be really extreme, and where they will be more exposed to both moisture and humidity. The conditions found in your garage can cause old wooden kitchen cabinets to experience structural degradation. These conditions can also give rise to dry rot and even invite pests to feast on your old wooden kitchen cabinets.

Avoid Cheap Metal Cabinets

Next, you want to avoid using cheap metal cabinets in your garage. If the price seems like it is too good to be true, it probably is. Cheap metal cabinets are prone to rust, and will not stand up to the conditions of your garage for long.

If you want to use metal cabinets, purchase high-quality steel cabinets, which will not easily rust and will be able to handle the temperature changes they will be exposed to in your garage. Look for metal cabinets made with a steel gauge of below twenty; the steel gauge indicates the strength of the steel and the lower the number, the better.

Use High-Quality Heavy-Duty Storage Cabinets

The best cabinets to use to create storage in your garage are custom high-quality cabinets. High-quality garage cabinets will be made from strong materials, such as stainless steel or galvanized steel. The steel should be coated with a resilient powder coating, which will help protect the metal from rust and will also provide color to your cabinets. Look for cabinets with double-thick walls, adjustable cabinet shelves, and drawers that rest on ball-bearing slides.

When it comes to garage storage, you need to use a storage system that can handle the changes in temperature and humidity without becoming compromised. Don't use old kitchen cabinets or low-quality metal cabinetry. Instead, invest in high-quality heavy-duty storage cabinets.
