2 Tips For Keeping Mice Off Your Porch And Out Of Your House This Summer

by Jamie Carpenter

Once the warm weather of summer finally arrives, you are probably eager to get outside and work in your yard. However, as you are doing so, you do not want to do anything that will send an invitation to the mice in your area to come up on your porch and eventually into your house. To keep this from happening, use the following tips to keep the mice off your porch and out of your house this summer.

1.  Put Away Your Shoes, Gloves, and Any Other Clothing

Especially when there is no rain in the forecast, you may be in the habit of taking off your yard shoes, gloves, and hat when you are finished working outside and simply leaving them on the porch. While this may seem like a convenient way to keep from tracking dirt and grass into your house, you will only be attracting mice to your porch.

Mice are always on the lookout for nesting materials and warm places in which to snuggle. If you leave your shoes, gloves, or any other clothing on the porch, they may decide that the fabric would make the perfect material for their new nests.

Not only will they chew up your things, but they will keep returning to the porch and may decide to see what else is around, including what's inside of your house. When you are done with everything, take your shoes and clothes inside so that the mice cannot easily reach them.

2.  Store Seeds in Airtight Plastic Containers

If you do not have a shed or garage, or if you find it more convenient to use your porch as a storage area, you may keep bags of flower and vegetable seeds on the shelves. However, keeping seeds on your porch will invite mice into the area.

If you keep seeds in their original bags, the mice will chew through the bags and dine on the contents. They will see your porch as a place to find food, and they may decide what other delicacies you have in your house. If you must store your seeds on the porch, put them in airtight plastic containers with secure lids to keep the mice from smelling and finding the seeds.

Using the above tips can help keep mice from being attracted to your porch so that they do not decide to investigate further and end up in your house. However, even if you do everything possible to keep them away, you may still discover a mouse problem in your house. If so, contact a mice control service to discuss your options for getting rid of the rodents and keeping them out.
