Maintenance Tips For Your New Composite Decking

by Jamie Carpenter

When you want to install a deck on the exterior of your home to help you enjoy the outdoors, there are many decking options you can choose from. But when you want to install a deck that has minimal maintenance and won't require regular staining, composite decking can be a great choice for you. Here are some easy maintenance tips to help you take care of this type of attractive decking.

Clean Your Deck

When your composite decking becomes dirty from weather, bird and insect droppings, or backyard parties, keep the surface of your decking clean by washing it. Cleaning your decking regularly will allow you to preserve your deck's quality and value and will keep it in great-looking condition. You can use a composite deck cleaner, which you can get at a local home improvement store, or use your own solution.

A good type of composite cleaner is to use liquid dish soap, water, and a soft scrub brush, or a mixture of water and a small amount of bleach. Apply the mixture with warm water to your decking and gently rub it with your soft-bristled scrub brush. You can also let the cleaner sit for several minutes to soften hardened stains before you rub the brush to clean it. Be sure you completely rinse the cleaner from your decking, otherwise it will leave a dingy looking residue that will make your decking look even dirtier than it was before you washed it.

Prevent Damage

When you take care of and keep clean your new deck, be sure you don't accidentally cause any damage to its surface. Composite decking is made of a softer material that can become damaged by high pressure from your pressure washer, so don't ever use your pressure washer on its surface.

Your deck can also become damaged from moisture buildup and mold and mildew damage from its growth on the surface and around the cracks of your deck. Keep in mind your composite decking has cracks between its slats, which can collect dirt and other organic debris outside. So be sure to sweep out these cracks and crevices to remove the dirt buildup. Use your garden hose to rinse clean all dirt that sweeping cannot remove. You can do this task once or twice a year to keep it in good condition.

You might also consider adding a composite decking fungus and mold protectant. This treatment will seal your composite decking and prevent any interior moisture intrusion and related mold growth. But check first to find out if your decking is already treated with this, otherwise it is a good idea to have your decking coated with it.
