Rock Gardens That Roll With Seasonal Changes: How This Works

by Jamie Carpenter

People love plants when it comes to gardening. However, you can have a rock garden instead. In fact, a rock garden does amazing things as seasons come and go, and there are some unique benefits to rock gardens, too. Here is how to set up a rock garden and create fun little areas within it, as well as how seasons change it.

Pick Large, Flat Rocks and an Occasional Small Boulder

Your rocks and boulders should be positioned in your yard as though they have always been there. Use stone paths to walk around your rock garden. Create the path first, then drop the other rocks and boulders in places that make sense and are aesthetically pleasing.

For example, a small boulder positioned just right under a tall tree looks like a nice place to quietly sit for a few seconds. Mounds of fresh soil create a hilly yard, but the addition of rocks provides a sort of small mountainside look and feel. Smaller rocks in a trench with flowing water and a little bridge give the yard a romantic look.

Plant Flowers, Small Bushes, and/or Cacti Between the Rocks

Since yard and garden stones do not square off or meet edge to edge, you will have lots of little spaces between the rocks to plant all kinds of plants and flowers. Maybe you want one mound to have just spring blooms and another just summer blooms, etc., so that there are clear changes in the seasons of your garden. Maybe you want a mix of seasonal plants everywhere so that as one season's flowers die off, the next season's are sprouting up and blooming. However you choose to do it, it will be pretty.

The Changing of the Seasons

Rock gardens have distinct looks for each season. In spring, moss grows on some of the rocks. In summer, you may have a lot blooming and growing that makes it green and colorful. In fall, leaves drop, making it look like some rocky cliffs in the woods at the base of mountains. In winter, it looks just like snow-capped mountains. You won't get that with flat terrain landscaping.

The Benefits of a Rock Garden

For starters, you have significantly less lawn to mow. You spend less time mowing, and a little more time enjoying what you have created. You can move, change, add, or subtract more rocks to create as natural a space as you want. It can be very picturesque as a backdrop for family events and photos.
